A solar flare is a large explosion in the Sun's atmosphere. Solar flares affect all space around the Sun just as they did for Kimi and Ben in Space Race. The larger solar flares even affect us here on Earth. They can cause problems for long-range radio communications and radars.

The photos on this page were taken by NASA. The one on the left shows a solar flare erupting from the sun. The animated photo on the right is a close up of that same solar flare in action. You can see it exploding out like it has been shot from a cannon.
