DYMOCKS MONTHLY BOOK REVIEW  |  JUNE 2004

Michael King

AUTHOR OF THE MONTH

MICHAEL KING
Penguin History
of New Zealand

Noted New Zealand historian and biographer Michael King died tragically in a car accident in March this year. With his wife, book editor Maria Jungowska, he was on his way to holiday in the Bay of Islands to celebrate the enormous success of his Penguin History of New Zealand. Michael King’s first books explored Maori subjects and historical figures (Maori Tatooing, Te Puea, Whina Cooper), an interest developed while working as a journalist on the

Waikato Times. Later he moved to literary biography (Frank Sargeson, Janet Frame). Along the way he moved from interpreting things Maori to expanding consciousness about the indigenous white culture in New Zealand with Being Pakeha, and an updated Being Pakeha Now in 1999. Tributes after his death summed up King’s greatest contribution as “he specialised in us.” Michael King insisted “You can’t understand your country and your culture unless you know its history.” His mission, to teach that history, is a wonderful accomplishment.

1968 The Year That Rocked The World

BOOK OF THE MONTH

1968 THE YEAR
THAT ROCKED
THE WORLD
Mark Kurlansky

It was a year of sex and drugs and rock and roll; the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy; the Tet Offensive in Vietnam; Christian Barnard performed the first heart transplant and civil unrest resulted in major demonstrations in Paris, Prague, London and in the United States. Television

made its impact as a major immediate news source. In a cultural and political history of this epic year, Kurlansky writes a fascinating modern history of a
time when social upheaval changed the world forever.

“Modern history is hard to write, but Kurlansky nails it in this account of an epic year, when liberal America erupted in anti war protests, student rebellion paralysed France and horrific Vietnam war scenes were shown on television. A fascinating look at how events in history come together to create radical change.”

Mark Fry, Dymocks Wellington.
